St Edwards School, North London

St Edwards School in North London were having trouble with noise pollution from the school gymnasium. The room was split into two with foldable acoustic doors. This meant that when the room was being used for two different groups, neither side was able to conduct activities without being able to hear the other sides noise coming through the divide.

When we were asked to make an assessment we found that there was a weak spot in the breeze block above the acoustic door. The issue should really have been dealt with by the initial building company when installing the doors.

Metropolitan Insulation installed a MF acoustic 12cm wall with independent aluminium framework. This also comprised of 1 layer of fermacel, a sound shield layer and all edges were properly sealed.

This dramatically reduced the noise leakage and the school was able to conduct separate activities simultaneously in the gymnasium.

UK Legislation and Local Authorities

UK Legislation
U.K. noise legislation is mainly contained in the Control of Pollution Act 1974 (Part III) and the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (Part II). These acts give district councils (through their Environmental Health Officers) responsibility to determine whether noise nuisance exists and powers to protect citizens from noise by a variety of means, including the designation of Noise Abatement Zones and the serving of Noise Abatement orders.

Local Authorities
Planning and Highway Authorities are required to have regard to potential noise when considering planning applications or planning new development – for example, new roads. Before granting planning permission, they may require applicants to enter into agreements controlling hours of working or methods of operation in order to prevent noise nuisance. Mineral workings and waste disposal sites are particularly relevant in this respect.

Royal Academy of Music, London

Metropolitan insulation were commissioned to look into solutions for The Royal Academy of Music Recording Studios, where the recording studios were becoming unfit for purpose. The inadequate sound proofing was causing issues for production and they needed a solution that would vastly improve the quality of the facilities and therefore of their sound production work.

After initially surveying the problem and gathering all required information, Metropolitan decided that the best course of action would be to replace the wooden doors. They are now slow-shut doors with sealed plate footings and concrete plinths. We also increased the density of the recording studio single leaf walls with double soundbloc and isolated perimeter.

Environmental Licences

In the last quarter we have dealt with 2 politically affiliated clubs that have had problems with their entertainment licences about to be revoked. Together with our acousticians we were able to offer multiple solutions including acoustic glass panels. The problems arose that council environmental noise officers tested DB levels consistently above 90. Without reduction pretty quickly, these clubs would not be able to continue with bands on there premises, therefore loss of major income.

Our in house complete service; testing, advice, method and implementation of systems not only gave these clubs peace of mind but it also enabled there revenue streams to continue unhindered. Proof that whatever your soundproofing issues maybe we can offer a complete solution.

Soundproofing Challenge – Uxbridge

The last few months have produced a number of interesting and successful projects for Metropolitan. In Uxbridge we were commissioned to completely insulate and soundproof The Car Paint Shop. This was an interesting and challenging but ultimately, successful. Basically the rear of this bloc and steel construction was primarily the store and workshop. The rear has been converted by the owner into mezzanine accommodation.

The challenge brought about by the proximity of the railway and major construction site nearby, was to sound insulate to an acceptable level. We carried out a complete overhaul by spray insulating the roof with low density open cell acoustic foam.

Then following the contours of the building we installed 12cm MF acoustic walls and ceilings. These steps provided the client with sleep at night as well as a green energy low emission, thermally efficient structure. Another example of how Metropolitan can rise to any soundproofing challenge.

Soundproof Studios launched in Manchester

The Uk’s first fully soundproof studio suite has been launched in Greater Manchester. The suite of 4 soundproof studios was funded by Manchester council.

The green screen studios mean that they can be used for virtually any filming, voice overs, photography, adverts etc. Project Director Sue Woodward said;

“There is increasing demand for dedicated green screen studios complete with cycloramas and sound proofing, triggered by the growth of digital content production and the need for bite-sized snippets of digital media in many formats for use across all business sectors in the modern world.”

DIY Homes answer to Housing Crisis?

A new co-housing development has just been completed outside of Lancaster. Residents who formed the Lancaster CoHousing Group three years ago have reduced their environmental impact and costs by combining resources. They share a laundry, tools, kitchen facilities and a playroom.

The houses have all been designed to the Passivhaus standard. This aims to reduce energy consumption through the use of sprayed insulation, triple glazing, biomass boilers and solar panels.

Another self-build housing cooperative has been developed on the outskirts of Leeds. Packed with straw bales and sprayed with lime render, the straw keeps the heat in and the sound out.
